At the moment we are cultivating around 25 hectares (62 acres) on irrigated land and about 5 hectares (12 acres) on dry land. For example : Tomatoes, and Onions
All the land of “Cal Valls” is certified as organic by the CCPAE (The Catalan Board of the Ecological Agricultural Production). The CCPAE is the body responsible for the certificate of Organic Farming in Catalonia. The first land in Spain to be certified as organic when the body of official certification appeared in 1989 was that of “ Cal Valls”.
From 1991 we also apply the techniques of the biodynamic agriculture. This type of growing is certified by Demeter International, a body of German origin which vouches for this kind of agriculture since 1924.
The set of regulations in each control organisation shows which are the systems of growing the land and the allowed products within the ecological agriculture. All the synthetic chemical products are completely forbidden (chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, hormones… ).
Compost is used for the fertilization. It is a mixture of animal dung and the vegetal remainders of the production of juice and preserves. This mixture must ferment for a minimum of 12 months in order to obtain the suitable characteristics to fertilise the fields. The soil is also fertilised with the leguminous crops, which are ploughed under when they are green, supplying the soil with organic material and nitrogen.
The control of the plagues is carried out exclusively with the products authorised by the CCPAE and by Demeter-International, although, to tell the truth, we hardly ever have any plague or plant disease in our fields.
